BERNARD J. BROWN is a Los Angeles based artist, focusing currently on choreography, instruction and performance. He is currently seeking his MFA from the Department of World Arts and Cultures at UCLA. His work is rooted in catalyzing change through dance; dance sparks dialogue which in turn inspires action, the action being the change within our communities. Bernard began his dance training at the Lula Washington Dance Theatre School. He earned his BFA in Dance from SUNY Purchase. Bernard has performed with TU Dance, Shapiro and Smith Dance Company, Doug Elkins Dance Company, bopi's black sheep/dances by kraig patterson and Louis Johnson Dance Theater Ensemble.  Bernard has performed with Lula Washington Dance Theatre for 18 seasons. He has been seen on the Daytime Emmy’s, Penumbra Theater’s “Black Nativity,” Donald Byrd’s “Harlem Nutcracker,” Tim Allen's film "Crazy on the Outside", and  “ANYTOWN” a dance-musical. He taught dance at New York University Tisch School of the Arts, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, and University of Missouri St. Louis. Mr. Brown's choreography has been shown in New York, Minneapolis and most recently at Royce Hall in Los Angeles. Bernard is an Alma Hawkins Fellow, Jean Irwin Scholar and a recipient of the Graduate Opportunity Fellowship (2014). The LA Times has called him "...the incomparable Bernard Brown..."
